2LB Residence Raphael Nussbaumer Architectes

The plot is situated at the edge of a rural village, in a suburb of Geneva, very close to the city center. A household with 2 young children who loves Brazilian architecture wanted to create there a new home. The sloping internet site faces south towards the Salève mountain, which majestically overlooks the location.

As is the case with most Swiss rural regions today, the zone is below design and style protection, which represented very a challenge for designing a modern residence.

The virtually obligatory position of the volume in the steepest element of the slope, the restricted height of the creating and the only feasible access to the plot from the south-west corner have produced the garden a very central element of the project. Enclosing the house softly in a protective atmosphere, it extends the living room region and blurs the limits between inside and outdoors.

The landscape with the impressive cliffy Salève mountain inspired the style of a strong, autonomous and mineral volume. All enclosing walls are in exposed concrete and were construct in one single manufacturing method in order to procure a monolithic aspect with no any horizontal division.

Privacy in relation to the neighbouring homes was a vital consideration. As an alternative of putting windows all around the volume, angled roof-lights stretch across the 1st floor and let the light flow into the heart of the residence.

The project’s organisation is based on a matrix of 3 x 3 units with a hall and staircase in the center.

The singular attributes of this residence consist of 3 distinct space structures: the ‘glasshouse’ for the most public areas which access the garden on the ground floor the ‘cave’ for all service locations – excavated into the slope. And the ‘lived-in roof’ with its attic-variety roof-lights for bedrooms, bathrooms, dressing room, family members space and studio. These elements synergise into a merely remedy.
